It is important to make the Jasper County Historical Society Museum and its contents available to the public. What would the residents of Jasper County, Indiana, like to see in their local museum?
My father claude z. Leek was from Rensselaer. He passed away in 1991 here in colorado. I was told of a Leeks Livery Stable owned by some relatives, the Leeks. I am trying to find any information about it or possibly a picture. Susan Leek, colorado Springs ,Co. email is susanmleek@gmail.com
According to our former County Historian, Beulah Arnott, in her booklet GONE AND ALMOST FORGOTTEN, oil was discovered by a farmer digging a water well in the 1890's. By 1900 there were 100 wells producing 400 barrels a day. The land belonged to Mr. Gifford, who built a million dollar refinery and added a spur line to the railroad. By 1904, the wells went dry and the oozing oil was used by the farmers to oil their machinery.
Asphaltum is just an earlier term that means the same thing. They used either asphalt or bitumen interchangeably and combined the names to come up with asphaltum.

Do you know any of the history of "Asphaltum", on CR250 near 49? Why does it have that name?
